Maqasid Al-Shariah

Assalamualaikum and greetings to all my beloved readers. May Allah always protect and bless us in everything we do. Today's post I will talk about Maqasid Shariah. But, first, I want to ask, have you heard about Maqasid Shariah before this? If this is your first time heard it, it's okay and I will explain about it. 

The word Maqasid is derived from the Arabic word which means objectives, purposes, and Shariah also derived from the Arabic word which means Islamic law. Shaykh Muhammad Al-Tahir Ibn Ashur, a great Islamic Scholar, defined Maqasid of the Islamic law as the objectives or purposes behind the Islamic rulings.  The main objective of Islamic law is to bring benefits to mankind and to prevent them from harm. In short, Maqasid Al-Shariah involves all aspects of life from the smallest to the largest. 

There are 5 principal of Maqasid Al-Shariah :

1. Hifz Al-Din ( Protection of religion)
2. Hifz An-Nafs (protection of life)
3. Hifz Al-Aql (protection of intellect)
4. Hifz Al-Nasb (protection of lineage)
5. Hifz Al-Mal (protection of wealth)

How can we apply Maqasid Al-Shariah in our daily life?

Protection of religion : The protection of religion in life is one of the main purpose in the creation of man as a caliph in this world. If we fail in preserving the religion, then it is the destruction that we will face either in life in this world or in the hereafter. The most important step that Muslims need to take is to return to the teachings of the Qur'an and Sunnah, surely our faith will not be compromised and can attract other Muslims to return to practicing Islam as a perfect way of life. 

 

 

Protection of life : As we all know, Coronavirus as known as Covid 19 had spread all over the world. With mortality statistics increasing and patients increasing as a result of COVID-19, the public should understand that life-preserving principles are important. As the leader, it is the responsibility of the government to prevent the spread of this dangerous epidemic to the people, in addition to maintaining order and peace so that everyone does not panic. So, we as the citizens should follow the movement control order (MCO) as known as PKP so we can protect ourselves from the Covid 19 disease.

Protection of intellect : It is through this privilege that man is given the status of a caliph to prosper the earth in accordance with the provisions and orders of Allah s.w.t. Through it, human beings can exploit all the gifts of nature for human welfare. In accordance with this purpose and in order for the intellect to function properly, Islamic sharia has emphasized on the importance of seeking and mastering knowledge. Allah said in the Quran :

The intellect and thinking are a privilege from Allah SWT that distinguishes human beings and other creatures. The intellect not only needs to be nurtured, but its function of reading needs to be nurtured for the good of the world. Islamic Shariah also in an effort to ensure sanity and power of thought has forbidden any form of conduct that could be to impair the function of the intellect.
